Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Next Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having previously been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration

Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily focused on promises to address growing violence and significantly curb migration.

He repeatedly blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.

His proposals included U.S.-style measures such as building holding facilities, barriers, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northern frontier.

Within a Broader Trend

Many analysts view Kast's success as aligning with a broader rightward trend in South America, following this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other experts further describe it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Clear Majority

Despite his decisive electoral victory, Kast will not have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are grouped together.

This legislative situation might complicate his plans, such as a vow to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"We have several aspects about what a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for implement them," commented a political professor.

The expert continued, "Regarding economic policy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However the area with much less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
