A comprehensive search and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing sailboats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Rescue Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine crew members, per a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the island.

That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader International Context

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50k operations cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.

Reacting to previous comments, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the boats and secure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
