A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
