The gravest potential impacts of the climate emergency for the UK have been detailed by scientists, ranging from a blistering 4C rise in average temperatures to a two-metre surge in ocean levels. Another scenario foresees a drop of 6C in temperatures following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy needs.

Plausible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These impacts, some of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as unlikely but plausible. The team said that these models addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had left the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," said the professor who led the research. "The nation has been planning lacking the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied planners what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Harsh Climate Projections

A further series of dire projections maps the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the end of the century. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.

The chance of the catastrophic events coming to pass could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be enacted to address climate change and how the planet's climate will behave. This research was compared to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for economic stability.

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action collapses or if vicious cycles like the Amazon basin becoming a net carbon source emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heat domes and water shortages affecting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the AMOC, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be completely altered," said Arnell.

These dire projections could be utilized in planning the development of major projects, including new towns, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Knowledge about these future hazards could also accelerate the push to slash carbon pollution.

The research created the extreme models using a combination of past data and records, computer simulations and climate physics. These outcomes exclude broader worldwide issues like the agricultural collapse and geopolitical instability.

This work was commissioned as part of a national climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

Official experts has recommended that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the threats for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been described as being "very weak" by certain experts.

An official statement said: "The climate emergency is at the heart of the country's focus, both building resilience and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is resilient for the impacts."
