The parent firm of Google the Alphabet conglomerate plans to commit $15bn to build an artificial intelligence data center in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
The facility, which will be set up in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a component of Google's global network of AI centers distributed over twelve different countries.
"It's the largest AI hub that we are committing funds to worldwide, apart from the United States of America," the CEO of Google Cloud announced at an conference in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, adding that the funding is to be distributed throughout the next half-decade.
This declaration occurs when American President Donald Trump has been asking companies from the United States to prioritise local funding.
The nation has risen as a prime location for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and quickly expanding online population have established it as a hub for AI and cloud growth for technology leaders.
"The facility will deliver our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress across the country," said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
An official contract to complete the project is set to be signed this Tuesday, state authorities confirmed.
"It is a massive leap for our state's technological advancement, technological innovation, and international reputation," remarked the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will combine computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an expanded fibre-optic network.
The venture is included in the Andhra Pradesh government's plan to develop six gigawatts of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Data centers are tangible infrastructures that accommodate the computer and network hardware that entities use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They feature servers, memory systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, combined with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to run them.
In Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been granting subsidised land and electricity to draw global investors.
India's data centre industry has developed swiftly during the last five years, crossing the 1GW capability milestone in 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 capacity.
