A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who fled following the explosion was found shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official was convinced the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
