The Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran passed away 89 years old.
The star, with filmography featured Chinatown, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. This announcement was shared via an announcement from her child, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with Diane Ladd in a number of films such as Rambling Rose, described her as “my amazing hero as well as my precious gift as a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside as she died.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist and compassionate soul that felt like a dream come true,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
The start of her career included minor parts in TV shows such as Gunsmoke and the 1970s saw her starring alongside Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
During the eighties, she was seen in the thriller the movie Black Widow plus funny follow-up Christmas Vacation while also joining the show Alice, a comedy program based on the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she was given a further Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic in which she portrayed the mother of her actual daughter Laura Dern’s role. The following year she obtained an additional nod for her performance in Rambling Rose that also featured her daughter.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew us to London for a royal premiere and a party for us,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”
That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, with John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played the mother of Dern once more. That period also saw her score Emmy nominations for roles in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.
She persisted in performing with Laura Dern in comedy drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She also appeared with actress Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Subsequent TV appearances consisted of the series Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
She also authored and directed the humorous movie Mrs Munck that included her and former husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him on a project. Indeed, I am the sole female ever to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Ladd was also the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a major inspiration on my life”.
Back in 2018, doctors misdiagnosed Ladd with a respiratory illness and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery after her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.
“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, instead apply it to discover, to illuminate the way for personal and collective growth, then you are triumphing,” Ladd said.
