The offspring of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror accusations at the start of her court case in the coastal city of the city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over comments she published on digital networks in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her dad.
A seven-day period of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and arson, left at least three hundred killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of inciting this unrest and confronts accusations of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the former president's arrest for disobeying a legal directive to give evidence at an probe into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has always refuted the accusations against her, with her legal representative previously describing the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly claimed the allegations against her were an bid to address political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the former president and his kin.
A few of followers from her political organization, her party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials participated in the proceedings inside.
The defendant's representatives has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is inadequate and does not have compelling proof for a guilty verdict.
The court case continues as both sides present their arguments before the court in what is expected to be a closely watched legal battle with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
