Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the departed director Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the hit rom-com When Harry Met Sally.

Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home at the weekend.

“How we will long for this man…” Ryan shared on Instagram, next to an image of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. We appreciate your faith in human goodness and your deep patriotism.”

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. Sources state that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.

“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan continued. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “The tragic, shattering loss of our parents is an experience no one should have to face. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”

His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”
